The Lightheart Lens Color Hilosophy™

Color PHILosophy? No, color HILosophy!
Color shapes an image more than anything — even more than light. It changes the mood. It defines the story. It sets the stage. And… it elevates or sinks an image. It’s incredibly important! That’s why I’ve developed my own color philosophy, the Color Hilosophy — a guide to colors that complement my exact style and vision. I like to think of it as a tool to help my clients plan and make the most of their sessions!

Hilosophy Basics

Blemishes

Style

When I edit images, I always focus on the following: soft neutrals as a foundation, muted greens as calming accents, and warm earth tones as grounding elements. Even though some sessions require very specific editing, I try to keep my galleries consistent.

Skin

Style

Skin tones and texture are always preserved! While I like to give skin a natural glow, I prefer to leave skin tones be. Nothing dulls an image faster than an artificial tone or a hazy face.

Since we’re talking about faces and skin and editing, I’ll mention this: I always want you to do what feels best! Don’t ever feel pressured to cover your skin for your session. Blemishes? Acne? Redness? I’ve got you. You’ll just see happy, hydrated and even skin.

My Clothing Guide

Spring/Summer Colors

Spring/Summer Colors

These tones feel airy and gentle, photograph beautifully in natural light, and complement greenery, florals, and open skies without overpowering the scene. All colors pair perfectly with jeans.

Fall Colors

Fall sessions shine with depth and warmth. These hues layer beautifully, feel cozy and rich, and harmonize with autumn landscapes. All colors pair perfectly with jeans, khakis & leggings.

Winter color works best when it feels warm. These tones add richness while keeping images soft, balanced, and inviting. All colors pair perfectly with jeans, khakis & leggings.

Best to Avoid

Busy Prints

Busy Prints

Sometimes, busy prints don’t translate well in post. Simple, solid fabrics are a reliable choice.

Neon Colors

Neon colors can really overwhelm photos, especially group photos. Gentle and soft colors work best and ensure everyone is on the same page — or palette!

Pet Hair and White/Black

Different Tone/Same Color

Different Tone/Same Color

If you have a furry friend, you know: pet hair LOVES clothes of the opposite color. White hair loves black clothing and black hair loves white clothing. While I try to keep a lint brush handy, it‘s best to avoid clothing that highlights pet hair. There’s only so much I can do in post without distorting an image.

Different Tone/Same Color

Different Tone/Same Color

This one is HUGE! Mixing very different tones of the same color (for example: sage paired with a bright or neon green) can conflict. Keeping colors within the same soft family helps images feel calm, unified, and timeless.
